Due to Covid restrictions the WSSCSW were obliged to find a new location for our Championship Show in September 2021 instead of the usual Chepstow Leisure Centre. We were very pleased to find FOREST OAKS FARM so close to home - it is a new facility especially tailored to dog friendly holidays and events and everyone was impressed with the facilities there - please take some time to go visit their website - www.forestoakfarm.co.uk.

We are looking forward to staging this Championship show at Forest Farm for the second time and we're sure you will enjoy your day out with us there. Of course you can be assured of our usual Warm Welsh Welcome.

Jan ReesJan Rees – (Typica)

Being dog mad from an early age and just after losing my faithful old mongrel it was indeed fate that led me to a stray brown and white spaniel that was destined to come home with me. After much discussion as to the breed, was he English or Welsh?, I took on the task of finding out. I attended the Cardiff Championship Show in my lunchtime from work, fortunately finding the breed ring and knew instantly that my stray was a Welsh Springer Spaniel and as I watched these beautiful dogs in the show ring was absolutely hooked and knew that was what I wanted to do.

One of my first purchases was from the show kennel of Les Jacobs (Greyclouds) having minor success I was learning all the time from some great characters and well renowned kennels at that time, Pencelli, Tregwilym and Dalati who were only too willing to teach an enthusiastic novice the ropes. What an apprenticeship to have, little did I know it then that I would still be so enthusiastic nearly 50 years later!

My first litter in 1975 was guided by the great Harold Newman (Pencelli) using his famous sire Sh.Ch. Progress of Pencelli, on a lovely bitch that was owned/shared with my future husband Alan, whose house they were born in which was called Ty-Pica so hence we registered this name as our affix at the Kennel Club and all our dogs since then to the present day descend from this very first litter. What a lovely start Harold gave us always willing to pass on his great knowledge and I’ll always be eternally grateful to him.

Typica’s first homebred Show Champion came with Countryman JW ShCM (Luke) what fun he gave me. Success also followed with T. Fieldsman JW, his daughter Sh.Ch.Coedybrain Carys at Typica JW ShCM but my pride and joy has to be my ‘Full’ Champion Typica Goldigger JW ShCM gaining his ShCh title at 26 months going on to qualify in the field for his SGWC (Show Gundog Working Certificate) realising my dream and ambition of breeding/handling one of my own dogs to that accolade. To date I’ve enjoyed success with several others including T.Kingfisher, T. Country Maid, T. Red Kite. T. Flash Harry, T. Seren Aur and most recently Hudolus Rhys Henllys who is a grandson of Country Maid and chosen from a lovely litter to come and live at Typica.

Judging started in 1981 going on to all Gundogs, Group and BIS’s at Open Show level. My first Championship Show appointment was in 1986 at SWKA and to date I have officiated approximately 17 times at Championship Show level including WSSC in 1992, 2005 and more recently 2019. Also the WSSCSW and SEWSSC and had the honour and delight to judge my beloved breed at Crufts in 2007. I have also been fortunate to judge abroad on several occasions, Swedish WSSC – 3 times, Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Umea, the WSSC of the Netherlands and the Spaniel Specialty in Finland and attended the National Specialty of America 2013.

I am currently a member of all four UK WSS Breed Clubs, I joined WSSC in 1974 and am currently a Vice President, also a founder member, President, Life Member and current Chairperson of the WSSCSW. I’m honoured to be judging at my ‘home’ show in 2022. Look forward to seeing you all there.

Mr David Howarth (Arkview)

David Howarth

I have been involved in showing dogs since the late 1970’s.

I first started with English Setters, showing under my parents’ Moorbrook affix, making up several Show Champions. My interest in Welshies started in 1985 when I met my wife, Jane. We have shown and bred occasionally since then, making up two Show Champions and breeding two more under her Arkview affix.

We also owned and bred Arkview Moonstroller who has been an influential sire in the breed. In addition we have owned Show Champion Clumbers and CC winning Curly Coat and Glen of Imaal Terrier.

My first WSS judging appointment was in 1992. I awarded CCs in 2006 and have done so 5 times so far, in addition I have judged them at the Swedish Club Show twice. I have also judged other breeds regularly and am now passed to award CCs in ten breeds plus the Gundog Group. It is an honour to be invited to judge at WSSCSW.
